Compared to other workers, flight attendants had 50% higher odds and pilots had 36% higher odds of dying from cancers potentially linked to radiation exposure — including breast, CNS, prostate, and melanoma. Notably, neither group showed elevated risk for non-radiation-related cancers, and ground-based aviation workers (mechanics and assemblers) showed no excess risk at all, lending further weight to the occupational radiation hypothesis.
Researchers used aircraft mechanics as a negative control and nuclear technologists as a positive control, and the results held up across both sexes. That said, the study cannot definitively attribute the excess mortality to cosmic radiation alone — other factors like UV-A exposure, circadian disruption, and unmeasured lifestyle variables may also contribute.
