A large Brazilian study found that temperatures below 19°C are linked to higher cardiovascular hospitalization rates — and the effect holds whether you live in a tropical or temperate city. Analyzing nearly 3 million hospitalizations across 103 cities over 14.5 years, researchers found risk climbed steadily as temperatures dropped. The findings suggest cold weather is a universal cardiac stressor, not just a temperate-climate problem.
A landmark Brazilian study published in PLOS Global Public Health is the first to compare cold-weather cardiovascular (CV) risk across both tropical and temperate cities within the same country — and the results are striking. Analyzing nearly 3 million CV hospitalizations across 103 Brazilian cities over 14.5 years, researchers found that temperatures below 19°C were associated with increased CV hospitalization risk in both climate zones, with no statistically significant difference between them.
The risk climbed progressively as temperatures fell, and reversed above 25°C, where warmer weather was linked to fewer hospitalizations. Experts caution, however, that the ecological study design couldn't isolate cold temperature as a direct cause, since factors like air pollution, humidity, and respiratory infections weren't accounted for.
Cold weather isn't just a temperate-climate concern. These findings suggest that even populations in tropical regions face elevated cardiac risk during cooler periods, pointing to a need for broader public health efforts — including heating access programs, vaccination against flu and RSV, and optimized pharmacological management of CV disease — across all climate types.
