A new genetic study finds that higher expression of the GLP-1 receptor gene (GLP1R) is associated with a 7% increased risk of male pattern hair loss. The finding held up even after adjusting for hormonal and metabolic factors. Researchers caution that the clinical relevance of this modest effect remains uncertain.
A new study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology suggests a potential genetic link between the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP1R) — the same receptor targeted by popular weight-loss drugs like semaglutide — and male pattern hair loss (MPHL). Using Mendelian randomization, researchers found that genetically increased GLP1R expression was associated with a 7% higher risk of MPHL, and the association held firm even after accounting for waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure, IGF-1, and testosterone levels.
The analysis drew on genome-wide association data from over 205,000 individuals, making it a statistically robust finding. However, the authors note that the effect size is modest, and that translating lifelong genetic differences in gene expression to real-world outcomes from short-term drug use — like taking a GLP-1 agonist — is far from straightforward.
