A new 25-minute digital tool, CheckCausesObesity.com, screens adults for more than 30 contributors to obesity across seven categories. In a study of over 62,000 adults, 91% had contributing factors in at least two categories — most often a combination of lifestyle, psychological, and medication-related issues. The tool aims to move clinical care beyond generic diet-and-exercise advice toward more personalized obesity management.
Obesity is far more complex than "eat less, move more" — and a new digital screening tool is making that case with data. Developed by a multidisciplinary team including endocrinologists, psychologists, geneticists, and patient representatives, CheckCausesObesity.com evaluates more than 30 potential drivers of weight gain across seven categories: lifestyle, social circumstances, psychological factors, medication side effects, endocrine disorders, hypothalamic injury, and genetics.
In an analysis of over 62,000 Dutch adults (median age 53, median BMI 33.1), the results were striking: the vast majority of patients had multiple overlapping contributors to their obesity — not just one simple cause.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: This tool has the potential to reshape how clinicians approach obesity — shifting from one-size-fits-all advice to targeted, personalized care. Beyond individual consultations, researchers see applications in stigma reduction, population health monitoring, and building predictive models for treatment response.
