A major new study published in The BMJ found that at least 24.5% of former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) at death — a figure researchers say is almost certainly an undercount. The study, led by Dr. Daniel Daneshvar of Mass General Brigham, examined 1,712 former NFL players who died between 2008 and 2021, with 338 donating their brains for analysis.
Among brain donors, 93.2% had a CTE diagnosis, and 30.8% had the most severe form — stage IV CTE. Critically, 61.3% of donors with CTE met clinical criteria for dementia, underscoring that this isn't just a pathological finding — it translates to real, life-altering cognitive decline.
