An oral antibiotic called gepotidacin performed just as well as the current standard injectable treatment for gonorrhea in a phase 3 trial. The drug matched the success rates of ceftriaxone plus azithromycin, offering a fully oral treatment option for uncomplicated urogenital gonorrhea. This could be significant as antibiotic resistance in gonorrhea continues to grow.
An oral antibiotic, gepotidacin, has shown it can hold its own against the current gold-standard treatment for gonorrhea — an injectable plus a pill — in a large phase 3 clinical trial. Researchers enrolled 628 participants and found that NAAT-confirmed treatment success rates were high and comparable between the two regimens, a meaningful result given the global push to find alternatives to injectable therapies.
The trial also highlighted that nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) could serve as a reliable, faster complement to traditional culture-based testing in future gonorrhea clinical trials, with a baseline concordance of 98.4% between the two methods.
