North Carolina health officials are sounding the alarm after three baby goats at Farm Adventures, a traveling mobile petting zoo, tested positive for rabies — with a fourth suspected case. A rabid skunk that entered the animals' pen is believed to be the source of infection. The goats were too young to be vaccinated and have since been euthanized.
The zoo traveled to 10 events across seven North Carolina counties between July 28 and Aug. 27, and also welcomed visitors at its Harmony, NC headquarters — meaning the number of potentially exposed individuals could be significant. No human rabies cases have been confirmed so far, but officials are proactively reaching out to anyone who had direct contact with the animals.
