Struggling with money for years — not just occasionally — may accelerate brain aging, according to new research from University College London (UCL). Published in Innovation in Aging, the study tracked nearly 2,800 participants from the UK's 1946 British cohort study across several decades, making it one of the most comprehensive life-course investigations of its kind.
Researchers found that people who experienced persistent low income or ongoing financial difficulty during early and middle adulthood performed worse on cognitive tests (verbal memory and processing speed) by age 53. Among those who later had brain scans, persistent low income was also associated with greater brain shrinkage and ventricular expansion — both markers of poorer brain health — between ages 69 and 71. The link held even after accounting for childhood disadvantage, education, and baseline cognitive ability. Proposed mechanisms include chronic stress-driven inflammation and a "cognitive bandwidth" drain, where constant financial worry consumes mental resources over time.
