Wearable ECG patch after unexplained fainting catches twice as many dangerous heart rhythms

Millions of people visit emergency departments each year with unexplained fainting (syncope), and about half leave without a clear diagnosis. The ASPIRED trial, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and published in The New England Journal of Medicine, tested whether fitting patients with a 14-day wearable ECG patch right after their ED visit could change outcomes.

The trial enrolled 2,234 patients across 45 UK emergency departments. While early monitoring didn't significantly reduce the number of fainting episodes patients reported over the following year, it dramatically improved arrhythmia detection — and that appears to have saved lives.
