The study analyzed DNA from nearly 4,000 affected individuals using whole-exome sequencing, comparing their gene sequences to those of parents and unaffected controls.
Many of the newly discovered genes are shared between OCD and tic disorders, helping explain why the two conditions so often co-occur in the same individuals and families. Several genes also overlap with those previously linked to autism and schizophrenia, reinforcing the idea that multiple psychiatric conditions may stem from related disruptions in brain development. Key risk genes appear active in brain regions governing movement, decision-making, and habit formation — including the cortex and striatum.
