The world just got a new line of defense against mpox. A global vaccine stockpile, coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) and funded by Gavi, launched on August 27 to ensure equitable, timely access to mpox vaccines for all countries during outbreaks. The move builds on lessons from the 2022 outbreak, when lower-income nations were largely left behind.
A major step forward in global outbreak preparedness: a new global mpox vaccine stockpile officially launched on August 27, designed to give every country — regardless of wealth — timely access to vaccines during mpox outbreaks. Funded by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and coordinated by the International Coordinating Group (ICG) on Vaccine Provision, the initiative brings together the IFRC, MSF, UNICEF, and WHO as key partners.
The stockpile builds directly on the Access and Allocation Mechanism created during the 2024 mpox Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), making it a more permanent, sustainable solution. The 2022 outbreak exposed a glaring inequity — lower-income countries struggled to access vaccines while wealthier nations stockpiled doses — and this initiative is explicitly designed to fix that.
