A new meta-analysis found that patients who were frail before ICU admission had a 38% lower mortality risk if non-frail, while those who were functionally independent had a 53% lower mortality risk compared to dependent patients. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia found that preadmission frailty and functional dependency are both strongly linked to higher all-cause mortality in ICU patients — though the overall evidence remains uncertain.
Researchers analyzed 55 prospective cohort studies (21 contributing to the meta-analysis), covering patients across a range of ages and follow-up periods up to one year. They used validated frailty scales and activities of daily living (ADL) scores to assess patients' pre-admission status.
