A new portfolio analysis published in JAMA Network Open shows the agency funded nearly 350 new grants between 2015 and 2022, with annual totals trending upward — peaking at 59 grants in 2022. The shift reflects a growing recognition that obesity isn't just a cardiovascular or metabolic issue; it's a major cancer driver too.
Obesity is now linked to at least 13 different malignancies, which together account for roughly 40% of all U.S. cancer cases. Beyond risk, obesity also worsens treatment outcomes, raises the likelihood of recurrence, and increases the chance of developing a second cancer — making it a high-priority research target.
Looking ahead, NCI researchers expect future grants to lean heavily into GLP-1 medications and "food is medicine" initiatives, with a focus on how weight-loss interventions can reduce cancer risk and improve survivor outcomes.
