The federal government is making a major push on behavioral health. HHS has awarded $77 million through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to strengthen substance use prevention, treatment and recovery, community mental health, and suicide crisis services. The grants reach states, tribes, and local communities, with SAMHSA's Christopher Carroll calling prevention "the foundation of a strong behavioral health system."
This latest round is part of a broader funding surge. Just weeks earlier, HHS awarded $96.7 million for behavioral health services — including support for homeless individuals with serious mental illness, suicide prevention, and SUD treatment. Earlier this summer, HHS also opened over $700 million in new funding opportunities, including the STREETS initiative targeting outreach and care for people experiencing homelessness and addiction.
