A new study published in Nature Communications found that adverse neighborhood social conditions in early adulthood are linked to a higher risk of coronary artery calcification (CAC) by midlife, a key early marker of cardiovascular disease. Northwestern Medicine researchers drew on data from the long-running CARDIA study and built a novel neighborhood social determinants of health index that combines socioeconomic status, food access, physical activity opportunities, and local crime rates.
Using machine learning and advanced statistical methods, the team found that participants exposed to more unfavorable neighborhood conditions in their 20s faced a measurably greater risk of CAC later in life — even after accounting for individual-level factors. The association was notably stronger among Black participants than white participants, pointing to compounding disparities in cardiovascular risk.
