A new early discharge clinic at Northwell Health Cancer Institute cut average hospital stays for hematologic malignancy patients by nearly 40% — from 25.7 days to 15.5 days — with zero deaths as outpatients or within 24 hours of readmission. The clinic, staffed largely by nurse practitioners, offers transfusions, IV antibiotics, and rapid diagnostics seven days a week.
Getting blood cancer patients out of the hospital sooner sounds risky — but a new study says it's not only safe, it's remarkably effective. Northwell Health Cancer Institute's early discharge clinic, designed for patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing induction chemotherapy, cut average hospital stays from 25.7 days to just 15.5 days — a 39.7% reduction. And 2025 data suggest stays have dropped even further, to around 11 days.
The clinic operates 7 days a week, 10 hours a day, offering blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, electrolyte replacement, urgent radiology, and rapid readmission pathways. Patients are carefully screened before enrollment, requiring stable vitals, controlled infection, reliable transportation, and a 24-hour caregiver at home. Nurse practitioners lead the clinical management throughout.
