Supragastric belching — a condition where involuntary diaphragm contractions cause rapid air intake and expulsion at the esophagus — can seriously disrupt quality of life. Current options like diaphragmatic breathing work but are often seen as tedious, while medications carry neurological side effects. Now, a multicenter randomized controlled trial published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology suggests a surprisingly engaging alternative: structured singing therapy.

The study enrolled 72 adults in China and randomly assigned them to either singing therapy (three 5-minute sessions daily, targeting 80 decibels) or standard diaphragmatic breathing. Singing therapy significantly outperformed breathing exercises at both the 1-week and 1-month marks, with researchers noting that better treatment acceptability likely drove the sustained benefit. Notably, the condition is also gaining attention in patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists, with one semaglutide study reporting belching in approximately 11% of participants.
