Robert F. Kennedy Jr. may be a political liability for Republicans on vaccines, but the broader wave of institutional mistrust he rode into power isn't going anywhere. Experts and pollsters say the "Make America Healthy Again" movement's suspicion of federal health agencies — the CDC, FDA, and pharmaceutical companies — predates Kennedy and was turbocharged by the government's COVID-19 response. Even without him, the GOP base is unlikely to revert to unconditional trust in public health institutions.
That said, the movement is more nuanced than a simple anti-vax label. Polling shows strong support for common childhood vaccines like MMR and hepatitis B even among MAHA voters, and majorities across party lines still broadly back vaccination. The more durable sentiment, as one Republican pollster put it, is: "Institutions shouldn't be trusted simply because they claim expertise."
