A large UK study links cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome to sharply higher risks of cataract, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Stage 3 CKM syndrome was associated with more than double the risk for cataract and macular degeneration, and a 76% higher risk for glaucoma. The findings suggest that systemic cardiometabolic disease may have serious consequences for eye health.
A new analysis of over 412,000 UK Biobank participants has found that cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome — a condition that bundles heart disease, kidney dysfunction, and metabolic disorders — is strongly linked to three of the leading causes of blindness: cataract, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The risk climbed with each stage of CKM severity, peaking at stage 3.
Researchers believe the connection may stem from chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired blood flow to the retina and optic nerve — all hallmarks of advanced CKM syndrome. That said, the study is observational, so it can't prove cause and effect.
