Cats are beloved pets, but they can also be sneaky vectors for a surprising range of infections. From cat-scratch disease and toxoplasmosis to infected bite wounds and ringworm, a simple question about pet ownership could be the diagnostic clue clinicians need. Immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, and children face the highest risks from these often-overlooked exposures.
With nearly 16 million cats living in German households, feline-associated infections are more clinically relevant than many clinicians might assume. A new review highlights seven key cat-transmitted infections — ranging from common to rare but potentially fatal — and makes the case that asking about pet exposure should be a routine part of the diagnostic workup, especially for unexplained lymphadenopathy, skin lesions, or rapidly progressing wound infections.
The most common is cat-scratch disease (Bartonella henselae), which typically causes regional lymphadenitis and is self-limiting in healthy patients but can cause severe disseminated disease in immunocompromised individuals. Toxoplasmosis, often overestimated as a cat risk, is actually more frequently acquired through raw meat or soil — though it remains a serious concern in pregnancy and immunosuppression. Cat bites are particularly dangerous, with up to 80% becoming infected, often with Pasteurella multocida, which can rapidly spread to deep tissues.
