UCI Health's Irvine campus — the country's largest all-electric acute care hospital — opened nine months ago, with Kaiser Permanente, Henry Ford Health, and Baptist Health all set to follow by 2029. The push is driven by decarbonization goals, cost resilience, and community health.
The U.S. healthcare sector is responsible for roughly 9% of the country's greenhouse gas emissions — more than the aviation industry — and a growing number of health systems are taking bold steps to change that. UCI Health's all-electric Irvine campus, the largest of its kind in the country, has been open for nine months and is leading the charge. The campus runs on a mix of rooftop solar and procured clean electricity, uses heat pumps and heat recovery chillers for hot water, and eliminated its gas central steam plant entirely.
UCI Health isn't alone. Kaiser Permanente is building three all-electric hospitals in California and Oregon (opening by 2029), Henry Ford Health is redeveloping its Detroit campus as electric-capable, and Baptist Health is set to open Florida's first all-electric hospital in Sunrise — also in 2029. For Kaiser, a lifecycle cost analysis found that an all-electric hospital with solar and battery storage could cut annual emissions by up to 48% and pay for itself within seven years.
One major hurdle remains: backup power. All these facilities still rely on diesel generators for emergencies — a fossil fuel dependency that undermines full decarbonization. Kaiser is exploring renewable microgrids with solar and battery storage to eventually phase out diesel, and fuel cells are emerging as a promising bridge technology.
