A new study published in Frontiers in Nutrition found that two of the most popular zero-calorie sweeteners — sucralose and stevia — altered gut microbiome composition, reduced beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and changed the activity of genes tied to metabolism and inflammation in mice. What's more surprising: some of those changes showed up in the next two generations of mice that never consumed the sweeteners themselves.
Sucralose appeared to produce stronger and more persistent effects. First-generation male offspring of sucralose-exposed mice showed impaired glucose tolerance, while second-generation descendants of both sweetener groups showed elevated fasting blood sugar. Stevia's effects were milder and faded after one generation.
