Researchers found that brain evolution is actually a competition for wiring space between two distinct neural systems — and the findings could reshape both neuroscience and AI design.
The popular notion that humans have a primitive "lizard brain" locked in battle with a rational, modern mind has been a cultural staple for decades — but new research suggests it's more myth than science. A study from Georgia Tech, published in Science Advances, proposes that brain evolution isn't about stacking newer, smarter regions on top of older, instinct-driven ones. Instead, it's a dynamic competition for limited brain space between two fundamentally different wiring systems.
The two systems in question are the neocortex — organized like a spatial map, handling vision, touch, and reasoning — and the limbic system, wired more like a "barcode" for smell and memory. Using AI models and data from 182 species, researchers found that when one system expands, the other shrinks, depending on what an animal needs to survive. Smell-dependent armadillos have large limbic systems; vision-reliant squirrel monkeys have neocortex-dominant brains.
