Popular weight-loss medications — including semaglutide, tirzepatide, and liraglutide — don't appear to raise the risk of respiratory side effects compared to placebo, according to a sweeping new meta-analysis. Researchers reviewed 123 studies and found no significant increase in respiratory adverse events across the board. However, evidence specifically in patients with asthma remains thin, leaving an important gap for future research.
Good news for patients on popular weight-loss drugs: a large systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society found that liraglutide, semaglutide, tirzepatide, and naltrexone-bupropion do not increase the risk of respiratory adverse events compared to placebo. Researchers from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health analyzed 123 studies — including 116 randomized controlled trials — covering a range of weight-loss medications and respiratory outcomes.
Across GLP-1 and dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonists, there were no significant differences in rates of lower respiratory tract infections, cough, or most upper respiratory tract infections versus placebo. Two minor exceptions — sinusitis and rhinitis — showed small but statistically significant differences, though researchers cautioned these may reflect chance findings given the large number of outcomes analyzed.
