A surprising alternative to antibiotics for gum disease just emerged. A yearlong clinical trial found that omega-3 fatty acids combined with low-dose aspirin were nearly as effective as antibiotics in treating severe periodontitis — with about 58% of patients in both groups hitting the clinical target. Researchers say the findings could offer a real option for patients who can't take antibiotics, while also helping curb the global antibiotic resistance crisis.
A yearlong clinical trial out of Brazil and Harvard has found that omega-3 fatty acids combined with low-dose aspirin performed nearly as well as antibiotics in treating severe periodontitis — a chronic inflammatory gum disease that can destroy bone and lead to tooth loss. The study, published in the Journal of Periodontology, included 109 patients with advanced periodontitis, all of whom received standard scaling treatment before being split into four groups receiving different add-on therapies.
The results were striking: both the antibiotic group (metronidazole + amoxicillin) and the omega-3 + aspirin group saw about 58% of patients reach the clinical goal of having no more than four remaining deep periodontal pockets — compared to just 23% in the placebo group. Even more surprisingly, combining both therapies offered no added benefit over either approach alone. And the benefits of omega-3 + aspirin persisted even six months after supplementation ended.
