Scientists at the University of Liège studied sleep patterns in over 500 healthy adults and found a striking link: middle-aged participants with a higher genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease experienced more frequent nighttime micro-awakenings — tiny, brief bursts of brain activity that interrupt sleep without fully waking you up. Importantly, this association was only observed in the older group (ages 50–69), not in younger adults (ages 18–31).
The researchers also examined the locus coeruleus, a rice-grain-sized region deep in the brainstem that regulates wakefulness and sleep.
