A new pill for HIV just got the green light. The FDA approved Bixlenvo (bictegravir + lenacapavir), a once-daily single-tablet regimen for adults with virologically suppressed HIV-1, particularly those who can't tolerate or benefit from existing single-pill options. The approval is backed by two phase III trials showing the combo maintained viral suppression with a favorable safety profile.
The FDA has approved Bixlenvo — a once-daily combination of bictegravir (75 mg) and lenacapavir (50 mg) — for adults with virologically suppressed HIV-1. Developed by Gilead Sciences, it's being called the smallest single-tablet HIV regimen available and is specifically designed for patients who are already stable on complex multi-pill regimens but can't switch to other existing single-tablet options due to pre-existing resistance or tolerability issues.
The approval was based on data from the ARTISTRY-1 and ARTISTRY-2 phase III trials, both of which showed that patients who switched to Bixlenvo maintained viral suppression at 48 weeks — comparable to those staying on their current regimens. No new drug resistance to either component was detected.
