The U.S. death rate dropped to a record low in 2025, according to provisional CDC data, putting life expectancy on track for a historic high. A sharp decline in drug overdose deaths — down nearly 14% from 2024 — appears to be the biggest driver. But experts caution the gains are uneven and the overdose crisis is far from over.
The U.S. recorded its lowest-ever death rate in 2025, according to provisional data from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. The overall mortality rate fell 4.6% to 689.2 per 100,000 people, even as the total number of deaths rose slightly due to population growth. Life expectancy, which hit a record 79 years in 2024, is expected to climb even higher once final 2025 data are released.
The biggest factor behind the drop? A dramatic decline in drug overdose deaths, which fell nearly 14% — from 81,313 in 2024 to roughly 69,973 in 2025. This marks the third consecutive year of decline, with the steepest drops seen among 25- to 34-year-olds. Experts point to a mix of factors: reduced fentanyl potency, tighter precursor regulations, wider naloxone access, and expanded medication-assisted treatment.
Still, experts urge caution. Gains were uneven — death rates actually rose for American Indian, Alaska Native, and some Asian and Pacific Islander populations. Influenza and pneumonia deaths surged, and new drug adulterants like nitazenes and xylazine pose fresh risks.
