Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has opened a new Ebola treatment center in Beni, North Kivu, as Congo's 17th Ebola outbreak — the second deadliest on record — continues to outstrip containment efforts. Bed shortages have been flagged as a critical bottleneck in the response, with Africa CDC estimating that up to 2,000 additional beds are needed.
North Kivu is the most severely affected of Congo's six impacted provinces, with a 68% case fatality rate. Crucially, there is no known vaccine or treatment for this Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, leaving health workers dependent on traditional outbreak control methods like contact tracing and patient isolation.
