A multicenter study of 410 patients found that a novel LIID score accurately detected metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), while liver stiffness measurement on the same device excelled at identifying advanced fibrosis — potentially sparing many patients an invasive biopsy.
One ultrasound, two answers: a smarter way to assess liver disease
Liver biopsy has long been the gold standard for diagnosing MASH and staging fibrosis — but it's invasive, costly, and not without risk. A new multicenter study out of China suggests a single ultrasound session could change that. Researchers validated a quantitative ultrasound-derived liver inflammation and injury detection (LIID) score alongside liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in 410 patients with biopsy-proven metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) across 10 hospitals.
The LIID score showed acceptable accuracy for detecting MASH, while LSM demonstrated high accuracy for identifying advanced fibrosis — and both were measured on the same device in one sitting.
