Michigan's largest health system is making a generational bet on its infrastructure. Corewell Health announced a $1.7 billion expansion plan featuring two new hospital towers — one at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids and another at Beaumont Troy Hospital — both of which are consistently operating above 90% patient capacity.

The bigger of the two projects is the $1.34 billion, 11-story tower at Butterworth Hospital. The 780,000-square-foot build will house a new emergency department, 180 private patient rooms, 17 operating rooms, and a hyperbaric chamber. It will also require demolition of existing facilities and city approvals given its height. The $440 million Troy tower will add 180 private rooms and a new ED waiting area, with direct parking-to-ED access designed to ease one of Corewell's busiest emergency departments. Both projects are slated to break ground next summer with a 2030 target completion, pending regulatory and municipal reviews.
