Speed matters when it comes to treating influenza. A new study published in Open Forum Infectious Diseases found that veterans who received oseltamivir (Tamiflu) within 6 hours of a positive flu test were significantly less likely to end up hospitalized compared to those who didn't get the antiviral in that window.
The study analyzed nearly 29,000 adult veterans diagnosed with influenza across two flu seasons (2022–2023 and 2023–2024) using Veterans Health Administration electronic health records. Researchers used a rigorous statistical method to mimic a randomized controlled trial, helping account for differences between the treated and untreated groups.
