A study of over 300,000 people found that while those with European ancestry had the highest overall odds of developing colorectal cancer, individuals with East Asian and American admixed-Latino lineages faced greater risk at younger ages — suggesting ancestry-based screening strategies may be needed.
A large study published in JAMA Network Open found that genetic ancestry — not just race or ethnicity — plays a meaningful role in both the likelihood and timing of colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnosis. Analyzing data from over 316,000 participants in the All of Us Research Program, researchers found that people with European ancestry had the highest overall odds of developing CRC, but those with East Asian and American admixed-Latino lineages were diagnosed significantly earlier in life.
The findings suggest that current risk stratification tools, which lean heavily on race and ethnicity, may be missing important nuances. A predictive model that incorporated genetic ancestry outperformed one based on race and ethnicity alone — pointing to a more precise path forward for early detection.
