A new study found that patients referred through a specialized early arthritis screening clinic had significantly lower functional disability and were more than twice as likely to achieve drug-free remission over five years compared to those who went through standard referral pathways. The key? Cutting weeks off the diagnostic delay.
When it comes to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), timing is everything. A new study published in The Lancet Rheumatology found that patients referred through a walk-in early arthritis recognition clinic — where rheumatologists performed comprehensive joint exams and fast-tracked confirmed cases to specialist care within one week — fared significantly better over five years than those who navigated the standard referral process.
The study, conducted at the Leiden Early Arthritis Clinic in the Netherlands, followed 122 early-clinic patients and 342 standard-pathway patients, all treated with methotrexate as first-line therapy. Both groups received guideline-concordant care, making early detection itself the key differentiator.
