Following two executive orders aimed at reducing the number of universally recommended childhood vaccines, HHS has now issued a request for information (RFI) asking the public to weigh in on how vaccine categories should be defined and communicated. Critics, including Stanford's Dr. Yvonne Maldonado and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Dr. Paul Offit, say the moves are politically motivated and designed to sow doubt — not improve science.
The consequences are already showing up in the data. Childhood vaccination exemption rates for kindergarteners hit a record 4.2% in the 2025–2026 school year, up from 3.6% the year before.
