A new study out of Pakistan found that mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) carries a 12-month mortality rate of 13.6% — far higher than the label "mild" might suggest. Patients with Glasgow Coma Scale scores of 13 or 14 faced more than double the death risk compared to those scoring 15. The findings raise serious questions about how mTBI is classified, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
Think "mild" traumatic brain injury sounds manageable? Think again. A prospective cohort study published in JAMA Network Open tracked 602 adults admitted with mTBI at two tertiary care centers in Karachi, Pakistan, and found that 13.6% had died by the 12-month mark — a sobering figure for an injury category often perceived as low-risk.
The study revealed a stark divide based on injury severity at admission. Patients with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores of 13 or 14 had mortality rates exceeding 20%, more than double the 8.3% seen in those with a GCS score of 15. Older patients (60+) and those who did not undergo surgery also fared worse, while surgical intervention was associated with a 51% lower risk of death.
