A new Pew Research Center survey of 3,488 U.S. adults reveals a striking disconnect: while AI is rapidly becoming a fixture in healthcare, most patients are left in the dark about its use. Nearly three-quarters of respondents said it's extremely or very important for providers to disclose when AI is involved in their care — whether that's analyzing medical scans, making diagnoses, or even just scheduling appointments. Yet 46% of adults aren't sure whether AI has already been used in their healthcare, and only 22% of those who have encountered it say they understood how it was used.

The transparency gap is especially notable given how fast adoption is accelerating. In 2024, 71% of non-federal acute care hospitals reported using predictive AI — up from 66% the year prior — and 72% of physicians now incorporate at least one AI tool into their practice, nearly double the 2023 figure.

By the Numbers:
