An 8-week home-based exercise program significantly improved lung function and physical capacity in women with asthma, according to a new randomized controlled trial published in BMC Pulmonary Medicine. Participants in the training group followed a structured routine three days a week — including warm-up stretching, upper and lower extremity strengthening with dumbbells and chair exercises, and breathing exercises — plus one weekly supervised session with a physiotherapist. Women who only received a general physical activity booklet didn't see the same gains.
The program was designed to be accessible and low-cost, making it especially relevant for patients in settings where formal rehabilitation centers aren't available. Researchers noted that women with asthma often face greater barriers to physical activity and carry a heavier symptom burden, making practical, home-friendly solutions all the more important.
