When a caregiver struggles, so does the child. A new study finds that depression and anxiety in caregivers of youth with cystic fibrosis (CF) are strongly linked to mental and behavioral health challenges in the kids themselves — even in the era of highly effective modulator therapy. The findings suggest that supporting the whole family unit, not just the patient, may be key to better outcomes.
A new cross-sectional study published in Pediatric Pulmonology reveals a strong link between caregiver mental health and the psychological well-being of youth with cystic fibrosis (YWCF) — even as highly effective modulator therapy (ETI) has transformed the disease's physical burden. Researchers studied 118 youth aged 7–17 across 11 U.S. CF centers, all of whom had been on elexacaftor-tezacaftor-ivacaftor for at least 18 months.
The findings are notable: caregiver depression and anxiety symptoms were significantly correlated with depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, attention problems, and externalizing behaviors in both children and adolescents. A caregiver's emotional state appears to ripple directly into the child's mental health.
Why it matters: Even with breakthrough therapies easing the physical toll of CF, mental and behavioral health challenges persist for both patients and their families. Clinicians may need to screen and support caregivers — not just patients — as a core part of CF care.
