The WHO has renewed its Science Council, bringing in 21 leading scientists from diverse disciplines, regions, and generations. The council will advise WHO on emerging technologies — from AI and gene editing to synthetic biology — and help translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world health gains. Two youth representatives from the WHO Youth Council are also included.
The World Health Organization has refreshed its Science Council, appointing 21 top scientists and experts spanning public health, epidemiology, biomedical research, health systems, ageing, engineering, precision medicine, and emerging technologies. The renewed council reflects WHO's commitment to geographic diversity, gender balance, and youth inclusion — with representation from all WHO regions and two youth members identified through the WHO Youth Council.
The Science Council serves as WHO's principal external advisory body, tasked with providing independent, strategic guidance on high-priority scientific issues and breakthrough innovations. With scientific discovery accelerating rapidly, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the need to stay ahead of transformative developments and ensure the benefits of science reach people everywhere.
