Vitamin D deficiency is alarmingly common among cancer patients — and it's largely going undetected. Roughly two-thirds of patients with cancer have serum vitamin D levels below the recommended threshold of 30 ng/mL, and nearly one-third of those already taking supplements still fall short. Oncologists from MD Anderson Cancer Center are now making a strong case for routine screening of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) at diagnosis and at key treatment transitions, paired with targeted supplementation for those found deficient.
The biological rationale is compelling: vitamin D receptor activation has been shown to induce cancer cell apoptosis, inhibit tumor growth, and potentially synergize with chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Clinical data back this up — a prospective cohort of nearly 4,000 breast cancer patients found that sufficient vitamin D levels were linked to significantly better overall and disease-free survival. The PROVIDENCE study found that vitamin D supplementation in patients on immune checkpoint inhibitors improved overall survival and cut thyroid-related adverse events by 84%.
