Cigna is taking aim at a long-standing gap in employer health benefits by launching its new Medical with Smart Coverage plans — an industry-first offering that integrates medical and supplemental benefits under one roof. Initially available to employers with 500–2,999 employees who offer high-deductible health plans, the program is set to expand further in 2028.
At the heart of the offering is a cash benefit of up to $7,000 that enrollees can tap during significant health events to cover everyday needs like transportation, hotel stays, and childcare. A new platform called Simple File Sync Plus automatically matches qualifying medical claims to applicable supplemental benefits, reducing the administrative burden on patients and surfacing benefits they may not have known existed.
