The FDA has selected Limbic, an AI-powered behavioral health company, for its TEMPO pilot program, making it the first AI mental health solution in the cohort. Limbic's voice AI tool, Unpacked, delivers 20-minute CBT sessions via phone—even on landlines—to Medicare beneficiaries with depression or anxiety. The move opens the door to reaching up to 34 million Medicare enrollees.
The FDA has tapped Limbic, maker of an AI-driven behavioral health platform, as an early participant in its TEMPO (Technology-Enabled Meaningful Patient Outcomes) pilot—marking the first AI mental health solution selected for the program. TEMPO allows the agency to include devices not yet FDA-cleared in CMS's new ACCESS chronic care payment model, which is outcomes-based rather than fee-for-service.
Limbic's offering, called Unpacked, uses a voice AI agent to deliver 20-minute CBT therapy sessions via scheduled phone calls—accessible even on landlines or flip phones—with clinician oversight throughout. Clinicians review session content, receive real-time safety alerts, and can intervene as needed. The goal is to scale mental health care without being bottlenecked by clinician supply shortages.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Mental health care is chronically under-resourced, and seniors are disproportionately underserved as therapy recipients. By pairing AI-led sessions with clinician oversight under a regulated, outcomes-based framework, Limbic's model could offer a scalable, accessible blueprint for closing the behavioral health gap—especially for Medicare populations.
