A first-of-its-kind eye drop combining the active ingredients of Xiidra and Miebo showed significant improvement in dry eye disease signs at just 15 days. The combination drop, developed by Bausch + Lomb, targets both inflammation and tear evaporation in a single treatment. Promising phase 2 results are now paving the way for a phase 3 trial.
Bausch + Lomb is advancing a novel dual-action eye drop that combines lifitegrast (Xiidra) and perfluorohexyloctane (Miebo) — two already-approved dry eye treatments — into a single formulation. If successful, it would be the first therapy to simultaneously tackle both the inflammatory and evaporative drivers of dry eye disease.
In a phase 2 study of 443 adults, the combination drop significantly outperformed lifitegrast alone on corneal fluorescein staining at day 15, though it narrowly missed its primary endpoint at day 29. Bausch + Lomb plans to use day 15 efficacy as the primary endpoint in the upcoming phase 3 trial, citing the clinical and adherence advantages of faster-acting relief.
