Venom immunotherapy keeps kids safe from serious sting reactions — even after stopping treatment. A 24-year Italian study of 40 children with Hymenoptera (bee/wasp) venom allergy found that long-term immunotherapy led to no severe systemic reactions during or after treatment. Venom-specific IgE levels also dropped significantly, suggesting the therapy genuinely changes the course of the allergy.
Bee and wasp sting allergy treatment proves safe and lasting for kids
A long-term observational study out of Italy tracked 40 children and adolescents with Hymenoptera (bee/wasp) venom allergy over 24 years, finding that subcutaneous venom immunotherapy (VIT) is both safe and durably effective. Most patients completed at least 5 years of treatment, receiving injections that started at a tiny 0.01 µg dose and built up to a 100 µg maintenance level — spaced out over time to every 8 weeks by year five.
The results were reassuring: no severe systemic reactions occurred during therapy, and adrenaline was never needed to manage a reaction. Even after stopping treatment, none of the long-term completers who were re-stung experienced a systemic reaction — a strong signal of lasting protection.
