A large genomic meta-analysis published in Nature Mental Health is challenging the long-held assumption that eating disorders are primarily about body weight or behavior. Researchers found that nearly 90% of the genetic variation associated with anorexia nervosa and binge eating is independent of BMI-related genetics — meaning these conditions have their own distinct biological fingerprints.
The study analyzed nearly 40,000 individuals with binge eating behavior and ~24,000 with anorexia nervosa (compared to 1.2 million+ controls), identifying six genomic regions tied to binge eating and eight to anorexia nervosa, including two newly discovered anorexia loci. While both conditions share genetic links with psychiatric disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, they diverge in key ways — binge eating correlates more strongly with ADHD and risk-taking behaviors, while anorexia shows a stronger link to OCD.
