A new study finds that implantable collamer lens (ICL) surgery doesn't just sharpen static vision — it also improves how well myopic patients see moving objects. Researchers tracked dynamic visual acuity (DVA) in 56 eyes post-surgery and found meaningful gains, especially in those with high myopia. The findings suggest DVA could become a valuable tool for assessing real-world visual function after refractive surgery.
We usually measure vision with a stationary eye chart, but real life rarely holds still. A new study published in the Journal of Refractive Surgery suggests that ICL (implantable collamer lens) surgery improves not just static vision, but also dynamic visual acuity (DVA) — the ability to identify details of a moving object. That's the kind of vision that matters when you're driving or playing sports.
Researchers at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences followed 56 myopic patients who received the EVO V4c ICL (STAAR Surgical). Of the 34 eyes with 3-month follow-up data, all achieved 20/20 or better uncorrected distance visual acuity. Improvements in DVA (measured at both 40 and 80 degrees per second) were observed across all myopia severity groups, though statistically significant gains were seen primarily in the high myopia group.
