Adults who survived childhood cancer and received anthracycline-based chemotherapy are carrying a significant — and largely unrecognized — cardiovascular burden, according to a new population-based study published in the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. Researchers in Iceland evaluated 60 adult survivors (ages 20–48) treated at a pediatric oncology center between 1981 and 2011, linking medical records with self-reported data and clinical assessments from a dedicated Late Effects Center.
The findings paint a concerning picture: more than a quarter of survivors showed abnormalities in heart size or function, and one in five met criteria for metabolic syndrome. Despite these risks, awareness was strikingly low — only 10% of participants identified cardiac issues as a potential late effect of their cancer treatment.
