A large retrospective study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that oseltamivir (Tamiflu) significantly reduces the risk of ICU admission and shortens hospital stays in children hospitalized with influenza. Analyzing data from over 7,000 pediatric flu hospitalizations across 13 U.S. states spanning nine flu seasons (2014–2023), researchers found that treated children were 31% less likely to be admitted to the ICU compared to untreated peers.
Perhaps the most notable finding: the protective effect persisted regardless of when treatment started — including in children who began oseltamivir more than 5 days after symptom onset. This challenges the widely held assumption that antivirals are only useful within the first 48 hours of illness.
