A real-world study of 860 vitiligo patients found that topical ruxolitinib cream delivered progressive facial repigmentation over 52 weeks — and the benefits went beyond skin. Rates of moderate-to-severe anxiety dropped from 37% to just 2%, while depression and quality of life also improved significantly. The treatment was well-tolerated, with most side effects being mild.
A large real-world study out of Italy is adding to the case for topical ruxolitinib as a go-to treatment for non-segmental vitiligo. Across 34 dermatology centers, 860 patients (mean age 47.4 years) applied ruxolitinib 1.5% cream twice daily, with results tracked at 24 and 52 weeks. The findings, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, show that repigmentation kept improving the longer patients stayed on treatment — and the skin benefits came with meaningful mental health gains.
Patients who started treatment in spring (March–May) and those with active disease at baseline saw the strongest responses, suggesting that timing and disease activity matter when initiating therapy.
By the Numbers:
Why it matters: Vitiligo isn't just a cosmetic condition — it carries a significant psychological burden. This study highlights that effective skin treatment may also ease anxiety and depression, making a strong case for integrating mental health assessments into routine vitiligo care.
